…asks the home of Fleet Street nostalgia, Gentlemen Ranters. From its weekly email:
…Do you need training in order to be a journalist? And if so, training in what disciplines?
Nobody seems to do shorthand any more; nobody seems to understand newspaper law or how local and central government works; nobody appears particularly well-versed in “newspaper practice”.
So… [...]

iPhone app developer Dave Addey has been investigating the Conservatives’ iPhone app used for canvassing: its general election app asks users to pass on their friends’ details, using data extracted from the users’ iPhone address books, in addition to noting their voting intention.
Calling the hypothetical app user ‘Peter’, and calling his hypothetical unwitting friend, ‘Bob’, [...]

I wasn’t convinced that this Guardian post really added much to the ’should journalists code’ debate (something we didn’t really discuss at news:rewired) but I thought Tony Hirst’s contribution was worth pulling out from the comments:
I was also at at the news:rewired event where Hadfield made his announcement, getting a feeling for the extent to [...]

As I noted over at Journalism.co.uk today, I’ll be occasionally posting or cross-posting over at Global Voices Online in future. Other contributors have been more than welcoming so far and I’m looking forward to meeting new people - albeit online rather than in person - and encountering new material and ideas via participation. Here’s my [...]

Wowee, 50 - many lengthy - comments on a blog post that was only around 150 words to begin with…
I’m talking about the debate raging on Adam Tinworth’s blog about the origin of some incoming traffic. It seems that an NUJ email account holder had arrived at a post on his blog as the result of [...]

Today I have left comments on three or four different blogs following up on references to an interview I did with Clay Shirky, prior to his appearance at the LSE on Tuesday evening.
Each time I registered my details and signed up for follow-up emails if possible. Then there’s been a bit of Twittering as well, [...]

This is…

… a place for my media and journalism links, occasional comments/ponderings and for bringing together my bits and bobs around the web. I’m a freelance journalist due to begin studying for a PhD in autumn 2010 [More here]. Find me: @jtownend on Twitter, jt.townend on Delicious, Muskehound on Flickr. Or check out what I’m doing via my [...]

Just a quick note on the new domain and blog home.
While I quite liked my old Wordpress.com theme it was extremely limiting (and it disturbed me that a Tory blogger had the exact same one… it was like bumping into Ann Widdecombe and realising you’ve got the same outfit on*) and didn’t let me try out [...]

There’s now a specific media&journalism category on Publish2 - so that’s a new one for the feed reader today. Interesting to see how Publish2 is developing - and great to use an application that has journalistic thinking behind it.
